How to Get Hard Things Done

One of the biggest reasons you don’t get things done that you planned to do is fear.
Not the more easily identifiable fears of physical and financial safety, but the fears that usually are deeper down.
Your emotional fears.
It’s your emotional fears that really get you.
Your emotional fears are what have you scrolling on social media instead of getting work done.
Running to grab a snack or taking a quick trip to starbucks instead of writing that proposal or making that phone call.
Fears of not being good enough. Letting people down. Being rejected or disappointing others.
And, it may sound crazy, but lots of times, you’re afraid of being too successful.
Hitting this milestone and having to do something harder.
People being jealous or thinking you have it easy.
Because at your most primitive level, you are a “herd animal.”
Humans are meant to live in a group, to be with others.
And to be cast out of that group in more primitive civilizations means death.
You can’t survive on your own.
And so your brain thinks that anything that might cause others not to like you, to kick you out of the group, is a life or death situation.
But that simply isn’t true.
So just like last week, coaching your brain and letting it know you are just fine is important.
Notice when you don’t want to do what is on your calendar. When you want a snack, or you want to scroll through social media.
Is there a fear there that you are trying to avoid?
Instead of just stuffing the fear down, allow it to come up.
Allow yourself to identify what you are actually feeling. And then to feel it.
I promise it won’t kill you.
What are you afraid of? Failing? Succeeding? Not being liked? Being embarrassed?
Let your brain speak to you and tell you what is really going on.
And then speak to your brain.
Comfort it. Assure it you are safe. And loved.
That you have nothing to fear from those worries.
You know it thinks they are scary, but they are not.
You are going to be just fine.
And then get back to work.
